History/Biographical |
The Herring family in New Westminster begins when Samuel Weaver and his family arrived in 1859. The family included Samuel's wife Hannah Willard, and several children, including sons Tillman and Henry. Samuel Herring established a farm on what became known as Herring's Point which was on the south side of the Fraser River.(This is now part of the City of Surrey.) He also owned other property in New Westminster and elsewhere. The quality of the farm's produce became well-known. In the first agricultural exihibition of 1861, Herring was awarded the most prizes for a variety of products. The farm also included dairy cows and Tillman Herring became New Westminster's first milkman delivering the milk from across the river. The Herrings also were involved in ranching and fishing which included the canning of salmon. Henry Herring was a licensed fisherman. In addition, they produced jams and also wines made from fruits such as red and black currents. Samuel Herring died in 1879 at the age of 49. Henry Herring died in 1895 and Tillman Herring in 1937. |
